World Elder Abuse Awareness Day: Violence Happens at any Age

Forsyth County is raising awareness in preparation for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15th, about older adults experiencing domestic violence and sexual assault. Victims of all ages impacted by interpersonal violence may experience feelings of shame, guilt or embarrassment.

Older adults may have been in long term relationships or marriages for a while and have traditional beliefs about their vows— “for better or for worse”—family and faith. The thought of dissolving or leaving their family would be unacceptable, even in the light of physical, emotional or financial abuse.

Generationally, we still have women in our communities who have never worked outside the home, been responsible for a budget, opened a bank account or established credit in their own name. Abused partners of all ages often cite lack of adequate financial resources as a reason for staying in unhealthy relationships.

Chronic health problems are another challenge for older adults affected by domestic violence. The intimate partner, spouse or other family member may also be in the role of caregiver and perpetrate abuse or harm.

In addition to domestic violence, it is a myth to believe that older adults, regardless of gender, could not possibly be sexually assaulted. All abuse stems from power, control and isolation in the form of physical, sexual, emotional, psychological or financial tactics.
