The Forsyth County Office of Environmental Assistance and Protection (FCEAP) continues to monitor the fire at the fertilizer facility located in the 4400 block of North Cherry Street in northern Winston-Salem. Due to the success of ongoing fire suppression activities, air pollution emissions from the site have significantly declined, reducing the size of the area affected by smoke in the downwind direction and the severity of its impacts, compared to conditions observed earlier this week. The area of impact will continue to shift with anticipated changes in wind direction. Enhanced air monitoring by EPA is continuing in the area immediately around the fire location. FCEAP recommends avoiding outdoor activity in and near the smoke plume, especially children, and adults with compromised respiratory conditions including asthma and COPD. FCEAP will provide updates, as needed, until local impacts to air quality subside.
