Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jim Shaw Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy at Smith Reynolds Airport has cancelled all summer camps for 2020. This difficult decision was reached after officials considered many options to determine if camps could be held with proper social distancing, appropriate cleaning protocols and other safety measures.
Based in Winston-Salem, the Jim Shaw ACE Academy is dedicated to showing Middle and High School students that they can have a career in the aviation industry. The camps have been operating for over ten years and have provided students an opportunity to learn about the theory of flight, aviation history, aircraft maintenance and even fly in an airplane.
Given the number of unknown variables still present, the risks of bringing our community together, in-person, for a tradition camp are far too great.
“The health and safety of campers and staff is the number one priority,” said Jim Shaw, the camp’s founder and Smith Reynolds Airport Board member. “Next year’s camp will be bigger and better.”
