Forsyth County 4-H had forty-three youth participate in their 2017 4-H Talent Show. Youth could enter two non-performing examples of talent including photographs, sewing, drawings, crafts and more. Judges for the Non-Performing Talent included Gail Bryson, 4-H Emerald Volunteer from Rockingham County and Julie Jones, a former 4-H Extension Agent. Overall winners included: Benjamin Cook's and Abby Grace Oliver's photographs, LilyRose Gourley's pencil drawing and Lynae Bowman photograph of a cow and calf. In the senior category, overall went to Andrew Pledger's photograph of daffodils and Kianna Jackson's photograph of deep pink azaleas with raindrops.
The Performing Talent Acts included skits, singing, piano performances, hula hoop routines, ukuleles and even a harp! Judges were Aja Brim, Music Teacher at Germanton Elementary School, Jim Cowden, North Central District Extension Director, and Carol Roan, author and communication coach. First place went to Shandi McDaniel who sang Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing". Second went to a skit entitled "Mr. Hazelspit's Annual Spitting Contest" and was performed by Alex Arrowood, Spencer Cook, Jadyn Hooker, and Lily Knepp. Both of those acts will advance to the North Central District 4-H Activity Day in June. The third place act was performed by Luke Arrowood and Connor Hayes and included a fencing duel. Zechariah Crawford earned fourth place with his diabolo juggling. Fifth went to Ashley Richardson who signed to "You Are My Shepherd".
Any school-aged youth ages 5-18 are invited to join 4-H.There are 4-H project clubs that meet monthly to learn about topics like science, horses, or Nature/Environment; general interest clubs that focus on various topics, and home-school 4-H clubs that focus on community service. If young people don't want to attend a monthly meeting, they can still join 4-H and participate in 4-H activities like public speaking and presentations, summer activities, photography contests and more.
