A Civil War Love Story to Remember

Join us for a visit with award-winning writer Suzy Barile, who will be discussing her book Undaunted Heart: The True Story of a Southern Belle and a Yankee General.

Undaunted Heart, the culmination of Barile’s extensive research into her own family history, is the story of the courtship and marriage of her great-great-grandmother Ella Swain, daughter of former North Carolina governor David Swain, to Union General Smith Atkins. Meeting the day after the Civil War ended, the southern belle and the Yankee general began a love affair that sparked an intense controversy that was talked about for generations.

Suzy Barile, a former newspaper reporter and editor, teaches English and journalism at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, N.C. She has contributed to several historical publications, including the North Carolina Encyclopedia and the Book of American Traditions, before winning a Silver IPPY Award for Best Regional Non-Fiction from the Independent Publishers Books Awards for Undaunted Heart: the True Story of a Southern Belle and a Yankee General.
