TECA Announces Game Design Project

Teen Computer Advisors (TECA) has plans for 3 programs this summer that are perfect for teens ages 12 to 16 interested in technology. Teens will be designing their own computer game using ultra cool specialty software called Scratch, designed by MIT, using simple drag and drop skills to create animated programs that can be shared with people around the world.

Scratch gives students the opportunity for a creative outlet while getting them excited about computers and technology through a medium most of them are already familiar with. Instead of mindlessly playing video games, designing their own gives them a chance to be imaginative and feel empowered. In some cases Scratch can also review basic graphing skills (individual character icons called Sprites are manipulated on an X and Y axis), and can be a good introduction to professional programming. Art, language, logistics, mathematics, and community fellowship through the online community are all addressed through this program, helping students to build their confidence and pursue a variety of interest in the computer science field.

TECA not only focuses on learning but also works to help others learn, too. Students will be helping Computer Coach Brandon Turner, a student at Wake Forest University. Brandon has received funding to travel to Cameroon and lead basic computer and Internet literacy skills to schools in the country. TECA students will be assisting Brandon by connecting with students in Africa using e-mail and other web communication functions helping them to practice their skills they are learning.
