Altered Books by Kristin Calder

After living out their useful life as primary sources of information, knowledge and entertainment Kristin Calder has found that books also have an afterlife, in fact a very creative afterlife by turning them into beautiful works of art. “I am intrigued by the way a book serves as a vehicle for expression and a narrative of ideas. This collection of altered books is my attempt to highlight the beauty of the book through the process of changing it,” says Ms. Calder. Using old books that have been discarded she folds, cuts and alters each page until it is transformed into unique sculptures that, as she succinctly puts it, “redefines this familiar object.”

Kristin Calder is a Winston-Salem native and graduate of Western Carolina University where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2007. Her sculptures will be on display at Reynolda Manor Library for the month of August.
