Synopsis and Discussion

High pressure continues to build into the Triad today, ushering in colder air that contains some elevated particle pollution concentrations that have increased air quality levels into the lower Code YELLOW range. Particle pollution levels are expected to remain in the low to middle Code YELLOW range tomorrow as high pressure overhead should create minimal low-level dispersion of particulates, especially in/near pollution sources. High pressure will begin to move offshore later Thursday as an upper level trough moving across the south central US brings in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico by the evening. Prior to the arrival of precipitation, the air mass over the Triad should remain cold and dry enough to limit precipitation from falling until the wee hours of Friday morning. With that said, evaporative cooling from rain falling aloft will lead to an increasing chance of a frozen mix through Friday morning for a good portion of the Triad. Particle pollution levels should remain Code YELLOW through most of Friday as the precipitation rate should remain light until noon, when rates increase and precipitation type becomes all rain to lower air quality AQI to Code GREEN by the evening. Dry high pressure builds in from the west on Saturday to keep air quality levels Code GREEN. (Payne)
