About the Academy

The Forsyth County Election Academy is designed to educate citizens on how elections are prepared and conducted. Participants gain knowledge about the different components and requirements of the election process.

Who Can Attend?

Classes are open to Forsyth County residents. The academy is especially beneficial for individuals interested in elections, running for office, campaign staff, and volunteers.

Cost

There is no cost to attend. The Election Academy is a complimentary program provided by the Forsyth County Board of Elections.

Course List

  1. Fundamentals of Elections and Filing for Office: This class will cover how elections are administered in North Carolina and the candidate filing requirements. Students will participate in a candidate filing and campaign finance simulation to experience those processes first hand.
  2. Protecting Your Vote: This class will focus on the timely and critical issues surrounding security in elections. Students will participate in a modified poll worker training to learn about the various safeguards and procedures in securing the votes and protecting all voters.
  3. Making It Count: This class will cover the myriad of activities that occur after the have closed on election night. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a mock election where they will process ballots and assist in counting votes.
  4. Its Official: Certifying Elections: This class will walk students through the post-election activities that lead up to the certification of election results, including the various state-mandated audits, how provisional ballots are counted, and the recount process. Students will participate in a simulated hand-to-eye audit.
