Synopsis and Discussion

Particle pollution AQI has risen into the Code YELLOW range today as pollution concentrations have accumulated ahead of a dry cold front approaching the Triad from the west. The front quickly passes through the region overnight and ushers in a transient surface high pressure ridge that is expected to move offshore by tomorrow morning. Air quality levels are expected to briefly drop into the Code GREEN range due to the turnover in air mass, but the surface ridge moving quickly offshore will likely cause return flow to bring back elevate particle pollution levels by the evening. For now, expect the daily average for particle pollution to remain in the upper Code GREEN range, with hourly concentrations likely rising to Code YELLOW after sunset. Another cold front approaches from the west on Friday, likely leading to a similar situation as today that should see particle AQI elevate to the Code YELLOW range. Chances of precipitation are higher with this second front (still a low chance overall), but the boundary may stall near the Triad Saturday with increased cloud cover potentially trapping pollution concentrations close to the surface to sustain Code YELLOW AQI for the day.
