Of the six species of venomous snakes found in North Carolina, the snake shown here is present in a variety of habitats throughout the entire state, making it the most common venomous snake state-wide and in Forsyth County. The head color is a good clue to its name, but learning the body markings is an even better way to recognize this snake. Click on the picture to confirm the identity and to learn ways to avoid having this visitor in your backyard.
